The Daily Dose #5 The Ultimate Weight Loss Question
Jul 24, 2024Most people, at some point in life, ask themselves this question: "How do I lose weight?" The greater question that almost never gets asked is, "Who do I need to become in order to lose weight?" There are people who grew up poor and became rich. There are people who were raised by terrible parents and, despite this, became amazing parents in their own right. There are people who were once overweight, lost it, and kept it off—three of them are your very own coaches. But it's not what they did that led to their success, but who they decided to become. The key word here is "decided."
We are who we are for a multitude of reasons: genetics, parents, family, upbringing, experiences—you name it. Most of who we became was largely out of our control, but who we decide (there goes that word again) to become is completely our choice. You can decide to become a homeowner or a real estate agent. You can decide to become a business owner or a philanthropist. You can decide to become a gym rat or that person who tracks their food all the time to keep their weight trim and slim.
Imagine that for a second. Imagine yourself being the person who wakes up first thing in the morning, gets a great workout in, goes home to shower, grabs a coffee, goes to work, and then walks on the treadmill for 30 minutes while listening to an audiobook right before bed. Imagine that. How much better shape will you be in a year from now if you do this? How much smarter will you be (on any subject) a year from now if you learn about it every day for 30 minutes?
I want you to think about this hard, and I mean really hard. If you walked on a treadmill or just took a walk for 30 minutes every night and listened to a class on Spanish, French, or Korean, you could be speaking fluently in a year. Well, maybe not fluently, but you'd know more than just the numbers and curse words. But seriously, your life (in all areas) improves as you improve.
Most people don't exercise at all, let's be honest. Most people end their nights in front of a TV or on their phones being mindlessly entertained. Gone are the days when people read a book or newspaper before bed. But again, the takeaway point is that all of this is our choice. You don't have to be like everyone else or everyone around you. You can be the only person at work, in your family, or in your friend group who loses weight and keeps it off. You can be the only person in your family to buy a second house, speak a second language, and open up your own business.
I've seen it. And what I've seen the most is people staying stuck not because of challenges, but because of a lack of effort. Most people don't even try. Ask yourself this question: Are you working on learning another language, buying a new house, becoming a millionaire, or are you focused on doing the same thing you did last year and the year before that and the year before that? You became who you are today. I'm going to say it again: you became who you are today, and you can become someone different if you decide to (there goes that word again). You will lose weight and keep it off when you become the person who can.
Now, think about it. What kind of person do you need to become to achieve your goals, and what steps will you take today to start that transformation?
